A night of shocking violence in Istanbul and Ankara

Human Rights in Turkey

Only hours after a de-escalation of tensions seemed to be in the making, Turkish police initiated a massive raid on Gezi Park.  Reports indicate prolific use of tear gas and water cannon against peaceful protestors.  Clearly, the situtation has taken a dramatic turn for the worse.  There are also reports of violence.

Amnesty staff and voluteers in Turkey are working hard – and sometimes at considerable personal risk – to document events in Turkey and will continue to provide the best possible information.

Meanwhile, the international campaign will continue.
